Our Lineage
Direct Transmission of Authentic Okinawan Goju-Ryu
The Roots of Goju-Ryu
Goju-Ryu Karate traces its origins to the port city of Naha, Okinawa in the late 19th century. It was formalized by Chojun Miyagi (1888–1953) who combined the hard, linear techniques of the Shorei-ryu style with the soft, circular movements of the Chinese White Crane system. The name “Goju” (hard-soft) reflects this perfect balance of power and fluidity.
Chojun Miyagi – The Founder
Chojun Miyagi studied under Kanryo Higashionna and later traveled to China to deepen his understanding of martial arts. Upon returning, he created a complete system that emphasized kata as the core of training, rigorous body conditioning (hojo undo), and practical self-defense. He taught only a handful of dedicated students, preserving the art’s integrity.
Our Direct Transmission
Yushikan follows an unbroken line from Chojun Miyagi through his senior students and their carefully chosen successors. This direct chain ensures we practice the art exactly as it was intended — without modern sport adaptations or dilution. Every technique, breathing method, and principle taught here has been handed down personally from instructor to student.
Our Instructor
C. Michial Jones – Hanshi
Jones Sensei started his training in the martial arts in 1977. He is an internationally published author and respected instructor.
Our Pledge
At Yushikan we do not chase ranks or trophies. We honor the lineage by training with sincerity, humility, and relentless effort. The knowledge preserved here is a living tradition — passed from teacher to student, generation to generation.
